What makes analog special?

THE invisible aura of photography

The Imperfection of the Aura: Analog Photography as Material Synthesis explores the ontological boundaries of photography, framing it not merely as a tool for visual documentation, but as a medium of artistic communication capable of rendering subjective experience visible. While photography inherently isolates the visual spectrum from a broader, multisensory reality, analog practice distinguishes itself by capturing an elusive, mystical atmosphere akin to the Walter Benjaminian "aura" found in classical painting. This research posits that the photographic aura is fundamentally tethered to materiality, specifically, the physical exposure of film, the unique imperfections of vintage optics, and the physical interventions of the darkroom. By examining artifacts such as light leaks, development errors, and chemical textures, this project argues that the value of analog photography lies in its capacity to archive human and mechanical imperfection, transforming the final print into an unrepeatable, emotive intersection of artist, artifact, and historical trace.
